Azalea SquirrelOur most unique attraction is our famous white squirrels. You do not have to visit any one place to see them. As you drive through town, make sure to look around. They are running everywhere from our local park to the community neighborhoods. The white squirrels are an important part of our small community and are treated well by our local residents. Take the time to visit the Olney City Park and you will see people feeding the squirrels on most days. As an annual event, we invite visitors to help with our squirrel count that is conducted the first, second and third Saturdays of October.

Many visit from far around to attend one of the numerous bass tournaments held on one of our three lakes. Borah Lake, Vernor Lake, and East Fork Lake are all located within minutes from downtown. The lakes are also great for site seeing or water sports. Take the time to stay at one of our many cabins or bring your RV and spend the summer.

The City Park is the home of the annual Richland County Fair where everyone can experience the sights, sounds and flavors of a traditional country fair. While in the City Park, visitors can enjoy a summer evening concert by the Cummins Municipal Band or attend the Olney Arts Council Fall Festival of Arts and Crafts in September, which bring crafters from several states, a wide variety of local delicacies, and entertainment for the whole family. During the holiday season, the Christmas Light Display transforms the City Park into a winter wonderland with over thousands of lights, animated figures and Christmas displays.

Musgrove Park offers residents and visitors alike a fun way to cool down on those hot summer days. The Musgrove Aquatic Center features a water slide, water umbrella, diving well and zero depth entry. Outdoor recreation abounds at Musgrove Park with baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, a playground and skateboard park.

Sample some of Southern Illinois’ finest wines while visiting Richland County. Richland County is the home of two wineries which feature locally produced wines from locally grown grapes.

For the last 40 years, Olney has been home to several different bicycle related industries. The Olney Bicycle Classic proves our love for the industry and the sport of bicycling. Every September, we continue to show our community involvement as over 200 participants attend this event. Join in the fun as we include rides for all ages!

Heritage Museum
